第一个有幸乘坐汽车的美国总统是第二十五任总统威廉・麦金莱。但是美国政府拥有第一辆汽车是在麦金莱之后的西奥多・罗斯福政府时期。
　　西奥多・罗斯福总统的坐驾是第一辆大型轿车。这辆由福特公司租借给美国政府的1939Lincoln K Model(Brunn) 有个非常漂亮的绰号：Sunshine Special （阳光之殊）。美国的第三十三任总统杜鲁门仍然喜欢乘坐这辆“老爷车”，可见它的不同反响的性能，质量与地位，真无愧于它的绰号。

大名顶顶的艾森豪维尔总统乘坐的是由Ray Deitrich制造的1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan。这辆汽车历经杜鲁门，艾森豪维尔，肯尼迪和约翰逊四个总统，倍受总统们的恩宠，可以称得上是总统坐驾中的四朝元老。

艾森豪维尔总统还拥有一辆Chrysler Crown Imperial Limousine（克莱斯特皇冠特大轿车），据1991年以来的报刊文章上说，曾有人在踞白宫四英里的小巷里看见过这辆轿车。这辆神秘的汽车在1953年到1960年期间一直被用做总统轿车。克莱斯特公司在这辆汽车驾驭于白宫的日子里一直持有对它的拥有权。这辆汽车为Derham车身，车窗为防弹玻璃，车底也为防弹设计，四轮车闸，机箱里还按有空调设备。

艾森豪维尔（真不愧他在二战中创下的威名）和尼克松总统都乘坐过一辆1952 Chrysler Imperial Presidential Parade Car（1952年的克莱斯特特大总统阅兵轿车）这辆轿车曾出现在2001年举行于赌城拉斯维加斯的拍卖会上

装甲客车制造商Hess & Eisenhardt为肯尼迪总统生产了一辆号称“总统大陆”的1961年林肯大陆大轿车（1961 Lincoln Continental Limousine）。这辆设计精良的汽车没有能保住这位年轻总统的性命，但是这并没有毁坏它的信誉，肯尼迪总统被刺杀以后，这位历经血雨腥风的“伤员”很快被修复一新（只用了13周）。修复过的“总统大陆”被加装了具有保护隔离作用的顶部和一个额外的防御装置。肯尼迪之后的约翰逊，尼克松，福特和卡特总统都曾使用过这辆汽车。

约翰逊总统的坐驾是一辆1964 Cadillac（1964年的卡迪莱克）。这辆在总统坐驾中极为特殊的“红颜”（因为它是红色的，所以戏称一下）后来被Liberace买去，2001年和艾森豪维尔，尼克松总统乘坐过的1952 Chrysler Imperial Presidential Parade Car都出现在赌城拉斯维加斯的拍卖会上。

尼克松总统曾乘坐过由Hess 和Eisenhardt从1967年开始到1969年制成的林肯大陆轿车（1969 Lincoln Continental Limousine），和Chicago Armor & Limousine制造的林肯大型轿车（Lincoln Limousine）（Chicago Armor前身是Moloney 客车制造商，后来收购了Lehmann-Peterson）。

福特和卡特总统都曾乘坐过1975 Cadillac Fleetwood 75 Limousine（1975年的卡迪莱克）。这辆宝驹曾行驶过51000英里，最后在里根当任时期光荣“退休”。
